Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a chase cover or chase pan?
A chase cover (also called a chase pan or chase top) is the metal cap that sits on top of a prefab/factory-built chimney chase. It acts as the primary weather barrier, directing water away from the chase structure and preventing it from entering the framing inside.
Why does my chase cover need to be replaced?
Most builder-grade chase covers are made of cheap galvanized steel that rusts within 5–10 years, especially in Wisconsin's freeze-thaw climate. A rusted or damaged cover allows water to pool and leak into the chase, rotting the wood framing and creating costly structural damage. Replacing it early saves thousands in repairs.
What is the difference between a chase cover and a chimney cap?
A chase cover is the large metal panel that covers the entire top of the chimney chase (the framed box structure). A chimney cap (or flue cap) is the smaller component that covers just the flue opening at the center of the chase cover. Both work together to protect your chimney system from rain, animals, and debris.
How long does installation take?
Most single-family residential replacements are completed in one visit — typically 1–3 hours. For large builder or HOA projects with multiple units, we schedule multi-day crew work and can complete entire communities in 1–2 days depending on scope.
Do you work with builders and property managers?
Absolutely. In fact, a significant part of our business is working with home builders on new construction and with HOA property managers on community-wide replacement projects. We offer volume pricing, flexible scheduling, and detailed project documentation for board and permit purposes.
What materials do you use?
We fabricate chase covers in galvanized steel, galvalume (zinc-aluminum alloy), stainless steel, and aluminum — each with different lifespan and price points. We recommend stainless steel or galvalume for Wisconsin's climate as they provide 20–40 years of service without rusting. We'll recommend the best option for your budget during the estimate.
